Philanthropy by Design Initiative: background
With the Philanthropy by Design Initiative Philips Design’s community aims to contribute to a better future for all, especially for the most fragile categories of our societies in less advanced economies. We aim to do so supporting the work of Non-for-profit and Non-governmental-organizations (NGOs) via the creation of design concepts that lead to the development of:

• empowering solutions (solutions enhancing individual empowerment and socio-economic development of local communities) and/or
• relieving solutions (solutions relieving the suffering of people in emergency situations)

The organizations that wish to make use of our design concepts have to fulfill and respect the following criteria and conditions

General filtering criteria
• reflect the overall Philanthropy by Design Initiative goal as described above
• work with humanitarian causes that address socio-economic and environmental issues of low-income communities
• be able to communicate / interact both locally and globally
• work on political and religious independent base

Filtering criteria for the use of the ‘Chulha’ low-smoke stove
The low-smoke stove that we propose has been designed and testing according to:

• local production rules and specific instructions for its installation and maintenance
• the use of concrete (the use of clay and other materials has not been tested and can change the performance of the stove)
• the culinary habits and cooking behaviors emerging from a field study conducted in a few rural and semi-urban villages of western India (e.g. the target audience cook sitting, use wood and/or cow dung as fuel to steam rice, roast chicken and cook chapatti). This means that the use of this solution in different physical and socio-cultural contexts, and for different purposes has not been tested.

Terms of use for the ‘Chulha’ low-smoke stove
By using our creativity, design skills and socio-cultural knowledge we have designed a low-tech and low-cost stove for safe and healthy indoor cooking for low income rural households. Our ambition is to fight sickness due to the air pollution generated with biomass fuels burning in indoor open fires, and to raise new local entrepreneurial forces for the production and distribution of such low-smoke stove. To realize this ambition we count on the missionary work of NGOs interested in the dissemination of this solution. The NGOs get a free license on the use of our Intellectual Property on the stove, and full access to our design tool-kit, under the following conditions:

- The ‘chulha’ should be locally produced via the training of new local entrepreneurs that can sell the stove for a fair price (medium and large enterprises already established are not allowed to commercially exploit the ‘chulha’ for their own growth). For your reference, in the piloting phase of this project in rural India, the Saral version has been priced for 10 euro and the Sampoorna version for 16 euro. If your NGO can lend the molds to the local entrepreneurs, the price of the stove can include a fair margin for them but affordability to the end-user needs to be guaranteed.
- In return, we ask to the organizations that make use of our design tool-kit to record the results achieved in the use and dissemination of the ‘chulha’. Progresses are collected via a form that we ask to fill in and send back to the attention of Bas Griffioen every 6 months / 1 year (Email: bas.griffioen@philips.com). The monitoring form can be downloaded in this webpage. Your report will allow us to assess the value provided by our design interventions and to address improvements.
- From a communication point of view, the Chulha cannot be branded as Philips or Philips Design, but we did reserve room for a small plate on the chimney holder that contains an aspirational message: " Philips Design and xxx [your NGO] wish you healthy cooking using this stove". Please include a similar message on your version of the stove. In the case of any public relations request on the Chulha, please contact the Philips Design Communication department on info.design@philips.com or +31 40 27 59342. Philips Design has the right to continue communicating about the project and all implementations steps. This includes naming the NGO and use of shared photos.

Please be aware that the overall implementation of this solution is at your own risk, Philips Design declines any responsibility.
