Blue Touch Pain Relief

The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch is an innovative new product from Philips, designed to offer non-invasive on-demand pain relief for people with (mild to moderate chronic) muscular back pain in a discrete, wearable device. It uses special blue LED light to induce production of nitric oxide (NO) in the skin, which is proven to trigger a number of protective and preventive processes in the body. It relaxes muscles through a mechanism centered on improved blood circulation, which results in pain relief.

At least 37% of adults around the world suffer from muscle and joint pain (acute and chronic), and Philips is responding to insights that sufferers are looking for more natural effective and safe solutions beyond pain killers. The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch offers non-invasive, drug-/chemical-free pain relief with just two sessions of 15 to 30 minutes.

Optimizing new technology
The venture to develop this product was stimulated by some new key technology and a known market need. “As well as being aware of the prevalence of the problem, we also had the research showing that blue light could stimulate blood flow and relieve muscle pain.  Philips Research had the capability to combine electronics and textiles, and this new product has been the perfect application of that technology,” explains David Aubert, Venture Manager, Philips Lighting.

“Design was involved from day one, helping to define the optimal solution. At the beginning when you need to pulse the market and potential uses, designers can create concepts to test in focus groups. We had the technology, but we needed Design to help us create a product. What we have now in the final solution is an iconic shape, and it is very easy to use.”

The value of co-creation
Design has been able to develop and refine the product with the research team from the beginning, making this an inspiring example of effective collaboration. “Designers enjoy being involved with such projects as early as possible, co-creating with technical colleagues to ensure that the final product is people-centric, as well as aesthetically pleasing. It helps to develop a much stronger proposition,” explains Oscar Pena, Creative Director for Lighting. “The BlueTouch clearly demonstrates the value of Design in visualizing new ventures. This is how we can make the best contribution.”

The BlueTouch is a highly intricate electronic product, which has been designed to be discrete, simple and easy to wear. There were many design challenges that had to be worked through, including the optimal shape and size of the patch, the optimal materials, the battery size and position, and overall ensuring that the device was both ergonomic and comfortable. “We had to create the optimum combination of function and feel – so the pain relief benefits could be realized in something that behaved like a garment”, explains Mat Bembridge, Product Design Consultant, Philips Lighting.

High-velocity prototyping
The venture started with just four people but grew to over 40 as it developed in maturity. Mat Bembridge worked as the sole designer in the early stages of the project, which later brought in designers with other expertise, such as textile design and soft product design. As this was a new venture for the company requiring continued support from the Board for funding, the project benefited from high-velocity product prototyping. “We developed over 100 different prototypes in total. They were very important in helping to communicate the value and progress of the project to the Board, particularly in the early stages, and for testing with consumers. It made the idea and its development much easier for others to understand”, says Bembridge. “Many people have back pain, and there is a real need for a product like BlueTouch. For me, it has been a great opportunity to understand and master new materials in order to produce something that is very new, relevant and natural.”

The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch is classified as a low-risk class 2a medical device. The product is being completely manufactured in Europe, and the aim is to launch it in spring 2012 in Germany.
