“Design was involved from day one, helping to define the optimal solution. At the beginning when you need to pulse the market and potential uses, designers can create concepts to test in focus groups. We had the technology, but we needed Design to help us create a product. What we have now in the final solution is an iconic shape, and it is very easy to use.” The value of co-creation Design has been able to develop and refine the product with the research team from the beginning, making this an inspiring example of effective collaboration. “Designers enjoy being involved with such projects as early as possible, co-creating with technical colleagues to ensure that the final product is people-centric, as well as aesthetically pleasing. It helps to develop a much stronger proposition,” explains Oscar Pena, Creative Director for Lighting. “The BlueTouch clearly demonstrates the value of Design in visualizing new ventures. This is how we can make the best contribution.”
The BlueTouch is a highly intricate electronic product, which has been designed to be discrete, simple and easy to wear. There were many design challenges that had to be worked through, including the optimal shape and size of the patch, the optimal materials, the battery size and position, and overall ensuring that the device was both ergonomic and comfortable. “We had to create the optimum combination of function and feel – so the pain relief benefits could be realized in something that behaved like a garment”, explains Mat Bembridge, Product Design Consultant, Philips Lighting.
